During All-School Sharing on Monday, February 6, SBS students were given a simple task for the next week: “read, read, read!” The next morning, the School’s ninth-annual Read-a-Thon commenced.
When the results were tallied after the weeklong event’s conclusion, it was clear that students and employees were up to the challenge. Participants read a cumulative total of 49,926 minutes, which is equivalent to nearly 35 days and is a 6,000-minute increase from last year’s total.
Additionally, the event raised $3,829 for the New Hampshire Humane Society.
“I’m amazed by the amount of time Read-a-Thon participants spent reading this year!” said SBS middle school English Language Arts teacher Wendy Pietroniro, who organizes he event. “The purpose of the Read-a-Thon is to inspire people to read more, and this year’s event successfully achieved its goal.”
The Read-a-Thon began on Tuesday, February 7 and concluded on Tuesday, February 14. Throughout the week, participants tracked the amount of time spent reading – including time spent reading aloud with family members or listening to an audio book – outside of regular school hours. Participants also collected pledges or donations for the event.
All monies raised benefitted the New Hampshire Humane Society. In the beginning of the year, middle school students chose the Humane Society as a local foundation to support through service work during the 2022-23 school year.
